If you haven’t already read about our experience in this industry, we urge you to find out more about us.  We designed this real estate license guide to be easy to read and follow,  thorough yet to the point and a complete resource for anyone interested to starting a real estate career.  Consider this your virtual real estate training session, reading this page may just be the best move you have ever made.

What Type of Person will Make the Best Real Estate Agent?

Real estate agents are really a special breed of people.  They are much more than just salesmen and women.  Through our years of experience we have found that most successful real estate agents have a true passion for helping others find a home, they see what they do, day in and day out, as much more than just another job, it is an opportunity to make others dreams become a reality and a good agent can always find the perfect home for any client.

Successful agents enjoy the lifestyle, the freedom of working their own schedule, but at the same time, they are willing to work extra hours, weekends and other days off as needed to sell a property.  Selling is how you make your money and you have to be willing to go where the work is and where the clients want you to be.

We have created a short list of qualities we have found common among successful real estate agents, you can view that below:

  • Willing to work hard and long hours  as needed.
  • Organized and professional.  Organization is very important take a look at this article on how to become more organized.
  • A multitasker.  You have to be able to manage several clients and properties all at the same time.
  • Not afraid of risk.  The real estate industry is full of risks, you have to be willing to jump on a good opportunity.
  • Well spoken, with a good voice and a professional vocabulary.
  • Honest and trustworthy.  Clients need to feel comfortable with you.

Of course not everyone will have all of the qualities laid out above, but they are important and you should at least have some of them.   This is not an industry for cheap used car salesman or the quiet types, there needs to be a harmonius balance between the two.

What Type of Training is Needed to Obtain a Real Estate License?

Well, as you may or may not know already, every state now requires that every agent have a real estate license.  With that being said, the requirements to get the license, vary from state to state.  It would have been nice of the government to set all of the licensing procedures and regulations the same, but they didn’t.

In most cases, getting your real estate license is fairly simple, straight forward and can be done with very little associated costs.  Yes, there are costs associated with obtaining your license, these often include real estate training and school fees, as well as application and licensing fees.

Since, as we mentioned above, the requirements vary to such a degree, it makes it near impossible for us, or anyone else for that matter to to tell you what you can expect to need before being issued a license.  We have however, created a list of the common state licensing requirements below, although we do urge you to contact your local real estate commission for exact requirements.  Those general requirements are here:

  • Almost every state requires you to be at least eighteen years of age at the time of application.  There are at least one or two states that require applicants to be twenty-one years of age.
  • You will need to file a real estate license application with the commission.  In most cases, there is an application fee of some sort, so please be prepared to pay that as well.
  • Most states require all applicants to complete a minimum of forty hours of real estate education in a state approved real estate school.  Some states still require a certain amount of college credit hours, these are usually in place of the real estate schooling.
  • The real estate exam.  You will need to pass a two part real estate exam, usually with a score of seventy percent or better.
  • Post licensing requirements will be your next concern.  Once you have passed the exam and obtained your license, you will need to continue furthering your education for the entire length of time that you have a license.  These typically consist of between 16 and 30 hours of additional education each year.

That’s really about it, we apologize if you were expecting more.  Getting your license is pretty straight forward, as we mentioned, and shouldn’t take to long at all.

What Else Should you Know?

There really isn’t much more to know.  Most agents plan for at least six

months to a year without income.  This covers the length of time to get your license as well as ample enough time to learn the ropes and make some new contacts.  You just can’t expect to sell a home on your first day at the office.

We strongly suggest you donate any spare time you may have during the licensing process towards working in a real estate office.  Most agents would be happy to take you under their wing and mentor you in exchange for some help around the office.  Please lust make sure that the agent you are spending your time with has enough experience to benefit your hungry mind.
